Brief Summary: As parents, we are the first role model for our children. They look up to us and emulate us, which is why we need to be mindful of the habits we develop. As our children grow and become independent human beings, we take on a more supportive role, whether it’s encouraging our kids to get off the couch and move more, take time to read a book once in a while, or try a new hobby or sport. Although teens may seem to want to spend more time with their friends than their family, there are still plenty of activities families can do together to maintain family bonds. Adding a little physical activity to the mix can double the benefits. Not only does recreation help promote healthy habits, it also helps control weight, reduce feelings of depression, stress and anxiety, plus it strengthens social bonds and promotes appropriate social behaviors. Family recreation also teaches life skills, builds positive character, and creates family memories. Family events and vacations can involve physical activities such as roller skating parties and swimming trips. Hiking and biking are also perfect ways to move more and explore together. The point is, find something that you and your kids will enjoy doing together and make it a priority to plan it into your week.
